SHAFTER HAY & CUBE
How the hay cubes are made:
First there is the swathing or cutting of the hay. |
| Then when the hay has cured it is chopped and put into a transport van. |
After the hay is put into the van, it is then taken to the cuber. |
| The alfalfa runs through a series of magnets and a metal detector, during the cubing process, to keep as much foreign material out of the cubes as possible. The Metal detector is able to detect ferrous and non-ferrous metals. |
The cubes are then cooled in an air cooling system. The air cooling system is used instead of sundrying, to help the cube retain a good green color. |
| When finished being cubed and cooled, the cubes are taken into the barn for storage. The barn has an asphalt floor, to maintain a dirt free product. |
When we are ready to bag or deliver a load, we send the cubes through a screener. This cleans out the fines and hay dust, which means the Shafter Hay and Cube customer is getting more for their dollar. |
Methods of delivery:
| First we can deliver the cubes in either 50 lb. or 70 lb. bags. |
Second, we deliver 1500 lb. "Super Sacks". They can either be delivered by the truck load, which is about 16 sacks, or... |
| They can be picked up, one sack at a time. |
The third way of delivery is in a "pup". A "pup" is a trailer that provides weatherproof storage for the cubes, if there is none available at the stables. |
| The final option for delivery is a "Walking Floor" trailer. This type of trailer dumps the cubes in a storage facility at the stables. |
Customer storage facilities:
Here we have an outdoor cement slab, with wood boards as the side walls and a tin roof. |
| This storage facility is set in a barn, with brick side walls and a tin roof. |
At this facility, they have a dirt area, with brick walls. The roof is in small removable sections. After they remove the roof, they lay plastic on the ground for the cubes to be dumped on. Then after we dump the cubes on the plastic, they come back in and re-lay the roof. |
Delivering the cubes from storage to your horses:
| Different customers use different methods of getting the feed from the storage area to the horses. |
This customer uses an ATV with a trailer attached. |
| Other places use pickup trucks or wheel barrels to get the job done. |
